ABOUT LA FÉNIX DE MÉXICO - PAPER SCULPTURE

Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz was a colonial Mexican writer, philosopher, composer and poet. Due to her sharp intellect and outspoken feminist views, she was widely known as "The Phoenix of Mexico" and "The Tenth Muse".

The "Phoenix de México" paper sculpture was created for the 3rd annual El Quixote Festival. During its third season, the Festival honors the Sor Juana's life and legacy with a series of events running from September 2017 through April 2018.

The paper phoenix forms part of an installation at the center of the Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz Day of the Dead exhibit and community event that took place at the City of Raleigh Museum during the month of November. The installation is an artistic collaboration between Socorro Hernandez-Hinek (altar), Monica Weber-Salinas (paper phoenix), and Leticia Alvarez (figure sculpture). Community members were invited to submit the name of a special woman that they would like to honor. All names were included in the altar.

Lines from Sor Juana's poetry are printed on each white and orange feather of the phoenix.
