ABOUT THE MASK WORKSHOP

Masks have played a constant and significant role in Latin-American culture and history as a fundamental element in traditional celebrations, carnivals, reenactments and dances, as well as in spiritual, religious and healing rituals.

The mask workshop starts with a PowerPoint presentation on the origins, uses and symbolism of masks in Latin-American cultures. Visual examples illustrating an endless variety of craftmanship, materials, colors and purpose inspire workshop participants to create their own mask.

Participants will make masks using a full-face dimensional card-stock base and a wide range of materials and will be instructed on how to attach the different materials with a variety of adhesives. All materials are provided (adhesives, paint, ribbons pompons, cotton, steel wool, raffia, rope, paper mosaics, beads, seeds, beans, wool, fabric, feathers, cardstock, wood-sticks, pipe-cleaners etc.)

This workshop requires a minimum of one 3-hour session or two 1.5-hour sessions for adults and one 4-hour session or two 2-hour sessions for children. It is available for all ages, skill levels and group sizes. Groups of more than 10 children or 15 adults require one or more assistants, depending on group size. In school-settings, the presence of the lead-teacher is required at all times.
